Walls, fences and outbuildings

Once a house has been cleaned, a green garden wall, a mossy garage roof or a stained fence suddenly stands out. These structures are often in the dampest, most shaded parts of a garden, so they grow algae and mould faster than the house itself. Rendered and painted garden walls, brick piers, concrete garages and timber sheds are all common.

Soft washing treats them the same way as the house: a biocide applied at low pressure, time to work, and a gentle rinse. It is particularly useful on fences and timber sheds, where high pressure splinters the wood and raises the grain, and on rendered walls, where it can blow off weak patches. Doing outbuildings at the same visit as the house is usually the most cost-effective approach.

Walls, fences and outbuildings: FAQs

Can a garage roof with asbestos cement sheets be cleaned?

Many older garage and shed roofs are made of asbestos cement. They should never be pressure washed, scraped or brushed hard, as this can release fibres and contaminate the area. Any treatment should be done without abrading the surface, by someone who knows how to work safely with asbestos materials. Tell us if your roof may contain asbestos.

Will soft washing harm the plants growing along my wall?

Plants are soaked with water before treatment so they absorb less solution, delicate plants are covered, and everything is rinsed afterwards. Climbers growing directly on the wall are the hardest to protect, so it may be best to cut them back or detach them first. Let us know about any valuable plants before work starts.

Do I need my neighbour's permission to clean a shared wall?

If a wall is shared or the far side belongs to a neighbour, you should only clean your own side unless they agree, and you may need access to their land for the work. Run-off and spray can also reach their garden, so it is courteous to let them know when the work is planned.

Is it worth cleaning a fence or should I replace it?

If the panels and posts are sound, cleaning is far cheaper than replacing and can make an old fence look much better. If the timber is rotten, split or loose, cleaning will not fix that. A cleaned timber fence can be stained or treated afterwards to protect it.
